The Tatev Monastery is one of Armenian’s most spectacular medieval complexes – both for its history and its breathtaking location. The monastery was built in the 9th century. It is located on the edge of a deep gorge of the Vorotan River, near the village of Tatev, in the Syunik region. Tatev is known for being the seat of the Bishopric of Syunik and played a significant role in the region’s history as an economic and political center, as well as for its spiritual and cultural activity. There you can see the warning stone, which was moved when the enemy was near the area. To the northeast of the monastery, outside the fortifications, is the oil mill. This mill is one of the best preserved and is an excellent example of the oil presses built in the region during the Middle Ages. You can reach the monastery by the “Wings of Tatev”, the world’s longest non-stop double-track cable car (5,7 km).
