Sevan is the largest lake in the Caucasus region and one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world. It is located 70 km from the capital, Yerevan, in the Gegharkunik province. The Monastery Sevanavank, located on the Sevan Peninsula, was founded by Gregory the Illuminator in 305. The two churches were built in 874.
